The Open Returns to St Andrews in July 2027
The 155th Open Championship is at the Old Course from 15 to 18 July 2027, and is expected to bring around a quarter of a million visitors to the area. A great many of them will need somewhere to stay, and East Fife homeowners are already getting ready to let.
Fife Council is accepting Short-Term Let Temporary Exemption applications for the 2027 Open between 15 June and 4 October 2026. If you hold a full STL licence already, you do not need an exemption.
If you would rather hold a full licence, start early. Fife Council advises that a full short-term let licence application can take up to nine months to process, and a fire risk assessment forms part of what you submit. Operating a short-term let without a licence is a criminal offence, carrying a fine of up to £2,500 and a one-year ban from applying.

What Fife Council Expects on Fire Safety
Anyone who lets accommodation to paying guests has duties under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 — assessing the fire risk, providing means of warning and escape, and having sensible emergency procedures in place. That applies whichever licensing route you take.
As part of a short-term let licence application, Fife Council asks for a fire safety checklist and confirmation that a fire risk assessment is in place, and forwards those checklists to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for consultation.
